Reclaiming the Night, Naming Perpetrators

68 women were killed by known or suspected male violence in 2015 (to 30 October 2015)

Rather than reading out a list of names of the women who have been murdered by men, in Australia this year, we have decided it is important to name the perpetrators.

So often the perps are protected, erased and/or shrouded in mystery and we at Reclaim the Night Perth believe this is wrong. Men murder women all the time. Brothers, fathers, husbands, sons and boyfriends murder their sisters, daughters, wives, mothers and girlfriends at an alarming rate. In fact, 68 women have been murdered, by men, so far, this year, and that is just the cases we are aware of. That is more than one per week! As some of these perpetrators have been arrested but not yet been charged, I cannot name them, so this list is in no way complete.

Every candle on the table, represents a woman murdered by a man.

It is not just these killers who have blood on their hands but also the institutions that allow or force women back into violent situations, institutions that enable male violence, and programs and laws that make it difficult for us to leave violent men. Inadequate funding of refuges, slashed income support and the family court system also support and enable continued violence against women.

The media tends to use language that erases the perpetrator, focuses on the victims and generally prevents us from analysing patterns of violence. A significant element of this is how the media tends to interview and/or ask the general public their opinions, rather than speaking to professionals.

This generally leads to what we at Reclaim the Night Perth have coined “Mystery is misogyny”, where a member of the public expresses their complete surprise at this so-called “mysterious violence”. There is a very clear pattern of violence perpetrated by men against women they know, and to ignore that is misogyny.

The media and the government have to be held accountable for negative practices that make male violence towards women and children socially acceptable and just another headline.

We need to organise our society to believe that male violence against women is as unthinkable as cannibalism, and genuinely act to end it.

All the information regarding the men who have killed women that I have shared with you tonight, can be found on the Man Murders Woman page on the Real for Women website. If you are interested in reading more, Real for Women can be found on Facebook. I would like to thank Real for Women and Destroy the Joint for their tireless work in reporting the murders of women to the public.
